Great News!
The reason I'm still up is I'm way too excited. Zhen and I just came back from Cleveland for an interview. He had been trying to match for the colo-rectal fellowships that were available at the beginning of this year. However since he started so late he didn't get a chance to even interview with any of those places. We were kind of worried about what we were going to do with his future as it seems he had to settle for a general surgery position with some group. The people that were supposed to find us jobs did not seem to very helpful at all. Maybe due to the fact that Zhen was coming from a community hospital and with no fellowship training I guess.
Well all of a sudden last week, one of Zhen's co-workers found out about an opening for a minimally invasive colo-rectal fellowship (not accredited tho) which they tried to offer him. However since it's so late in the year already, Zhen's co-worker had already signed up with another hospital. So instead, he referred them to Zhen. Of course we jumped at the chance and had scheduled an interview within a day of finding out about the position basically. Yesterday we went over and had dinner with an attending that was part of the program...today Zhen went to meet everyone for the interviews. After basically just a quick meeting with the chairman of the group, Zhen was offered the job. It's in our view an even better opportunity than if he had matched with the colo-rectal fellowships. As this can't possibly be more specialized than that.
What's so amazing is that he does not seem so qualified for the job and there were SIX other residents going for the job. I mean the guy that was supposed to join the group in the first place was from John's Hopkins! We are very grateful for this opportunity that seemingly just plopped on our laps. The whole way home today we could not stop talking about how lucky we were. Our future is so bright...I just can't wait!
